The demolition of existing buildings and the construction of a new Cancer Research Pavilion as an extension of the existing Cancer Prevention Pavilion constructed in 2000. In addition to expanding the Radiation Oncology Department with three radiation therapy vaults, Women's Center, research, and teaching laboratories, the Cancer Research Pavilion will make Fox Chase one of the largest academic radiation oncology programs on the East Coast.

Approach and Challenges

Building a new addition adjacent to an existing occupied structure presents many challenges, such as; peeling away the exterior skin of an occupied building, tracing out, disconnecting, and expanding the utilities, including medical grade services, without interruption requires proactive planning, thorough understanding of the project and effective communication. The coordination of construction and operation actions, such as; the removal of existing structures above grade without impacting the structural integrity, building over an existing loading dock without down time of services or violating the safety of the occupants required a total team approach. P. Agnes was also intimately involved in the negotiations with the neighborhood community and Jeanes Hospital to define a logistics plan that would allow for staging and sequencing of deliveries and materials to support the project without becoming a hindrance to the community, Jeanes Hospital or Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Because of the combined efforts by all involved, the strength of Design and Management Teams continued efforts to work through the challenges and Owners ability to make timely decisions, the project was completed six months ahead of schedule.
